Cambridge, Ohio

Cambridge is a city located in Guernsey County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,520. It is the county seat of Guernsey CountyTemplate:GR, and the center of the Cambridge Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau in 2003). Cambridge is well-known among glass collectors as being the location of the Cambridge Glass as well as the Mosser Glass plant. It is located adjacent to the intersection of I-70 and I-77, which the Ohio Department of Transportation proclaimed in 1969 was the world's largest interchange (in terms of land area). Cambridge was the birthplace of U.S. Senator and astronaut John Glenn, actor William Boyd (known for his film portrayal of cowboy hero "Hopalong Cassidy"), and of William Oxley Thompson, who was president of the Ohio State University for 26 years.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²). 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,520 people, 4,924 households, and 2,954 families residing in the city. The population density is 792.9/km² (2,055.1/mi²). There are 5,585 housing units at an average density of 384.4/km² (996.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.84% White, 3.91% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,924 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 35.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,102, and the median income for a family is $30,780. Males have a median income of $26,368 versus $20,596 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,452. 21.2% of the population and 18.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
