Template:GBdot Cambourne is a new town about twelve miles (20 km) west of Cambridge, England, lying in the district of South Cambridgeshire and the county of Cambridgeshire, comprising three villages: Great Cambourne, and the smaller Lower Cambourne and Upper Cambourne. The name of the town was created from the names of Cambridge, the nearest city, and Bourn, a nearby village. Cambourne was initially going to be named Monkfield. Construction of the town began in 1998 on what was previously farmland; the final population is expected to be around 10,000.
Cambourne now contains the headquarters of the District Council, which moved there from the centre of Cambridge in 2004. There is a business park where the District Council is located, along with Citrix Systems (R&D) and one or two other businesses. Shops are currently being built, as the only current retail outlet is a Morrisons supermarket.
