California is a borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 5,274. It includes the campus of California University of Pennsylvania.
Geography
California is located at 40°3'55" North, 79°53'50" West (40.065313, -79.897120)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 29.1 km² (11.2 mi²). 28.6 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.78% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,274 people, 1,891 households, and 867 families residing in the borough. The population density is 184.6/km² (478.2/mi²). There are 2,092 housing units at an average density of 73.2/km² (189.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 93.93% White, 4.13% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,891 households out of which 16.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.8% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.1% are non-families. 36.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.85.
In the borough the population is spread out with 10.7% under the age of 18, 42.2% from 18 to 24, 17.3% from 25 to 44, 15.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.
