CHNM is an independent Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based television station aimed at promoting the province's multicultural diversity. It uses the on-air brand Channel M. It produces daily newscasts in Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi, and weekly newscasts in Tagalog and Korean. Channel M has entered into an agreement with another Vancouver television station, CIVT, enabling the two stations to share news resources.
The license for a multicultural station in Vancouver was sought after by Rogers Communications and Multivan Broadcasting, the former having wanted (for many years) to establish a station similar to Toronto's CFMT. However, in the end the license went to the latter, with the CRTC citing its local ownership as one of the reasons for the decision. CHNM went on air on June 27, 2003, broadcasting on UHF channel 42. The station is currently seen on cable 8 on area systems (Cable 10 on Vancouver Island). CHNM briefly considered establishing a terrestrial rebroadcasting transmitter near Victoria, but has since shelved that process.
