Byram Township is a township located in Sussex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 8,254.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 57.4 km² (22.2 mi²). 54.6 km² (21.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.00% water. It is divided into several sections, based around the various lakesin the area. They include Lake Lackawanna, Cranberry Lake, and Forest Lakes, and East Brookwood. Byram does not have a post office and can use either Stanhope or Andover as their mailing address depending on which side of town they live on.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,254 people, 2,833 households, and 2,317 families residing in the township. The population density is 151.3/km² (391.8/mi²). There are 3,078 housing units at an average density of 56.4/km² (146.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.77% White, 0.97% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 2.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,833 households out of which 43.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.9% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% are non-families. 13.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.24.
In the township the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $81,532, and the median income for a family is $89,500. Males have a median income of $59,722 versus $40,396 for females. The per capita income for the township is $30,710. 1.7% of the population and 0.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
