Aisha

Aishas are likened to cats with two large, alien-like ears, as well as a pair of standard ones, giving them excellent hearing. There are also six-eared Alien Aishas appearing on the Neopets website. They are generally quite intelligent and have a natural penchant for magic. Mysteriously, all Aishas are born with a collar on. This collar has a letter "A" dangling from it. (Darigan Aishas are the exception; their collar has a "D")

The Aisha is currently (as of October 2004) ranked 18th out of 50 species in popularity with 2.9 million currently in existence. Despite not being in the top 10 or even 15 most popular pets, they are very prominent in merchandising with a multitude of stuffed Aishas (always referred to as plushies on the site), jewelry and t-shirts available.

They can be painted in 42 different colors, including the elegantly evil Darigan or the six-eared Alien, a color exclusive to Aishas.

"Famous" Aishas include the Court Dancer, who seduced the entire Meridellan court during the Battle for Meridell; Lisha, the Lupe hero Jeran's little sister and magical adept who defeated the Court Dancer; Captain Xelqued, an Alien Aisha and creator of the Aisha Myriad artifact; Farlax V, the Alien Aisha who run the vending machine; Loretta and Rosetta Fontaine, waitresses at Krawk Island's famous Golden Dubloon restaurant; Lady Osiri of the Desert Pottery shop; Imiya from Maths Nightmare; the Aisha Thieves Purrow and Meesha, a mysterious pack of cat burglars operating out of the catacombs beneath Neopia Central; and Isca and Caylis from the all-new Curse of Maraqua plot.

Acara

The Acara is basically goat or cat-like (with four legs and fur) and has two horns on its head. However, it is often hinted at that the Acara has an instinctual love of water, and the "tentacles" may have something to do with that aquatic nature. This may also imply that the Acara was based on Capricorn. In general, they tend to be very playful.

When first introduced on the Neopets website, the pet now known as the Acara was called the Tigren. They were chosen from a player's design as part of a Create-A-Pet contest. Originally, they were limited edition but have now become common. They are quite popular, particularly among female players. As of October 2004, they were ranked 9th of 50 species in popularity; with 3.7 million in existence.

They can be painted in any of 36 colors available to the species. One of the more interesting of these is the Maraquan variant, which appears to be a return to the Acara's watery roots.

Famous Acaras include Vira, a vain creature featured in the Gallery of Evil, Princess Fernypoo, a spoilt princess featuring in the card game Cheat!; Professor Chesterpot, the Acara who discovered Maraqua; and Roberta, a diplomat-turned-sorceress who is due to star in the upcoming Neopets: The Darkest Faerie video game.

Blumaroo

Blumaroos are vaguely kangaroo-like in nature, reminiscent of the popular Winnie the Pooh character Tigger, who also bounced around on his tail. They have long, floppy ears, strong tails to bounce on (rare is the picture of a Blumaroo on its feet) and a long, almost tapir-like face. They are generally fun-loving creatures who like nothing better than a festival. This explains the somewhat carnival-like appearance of their native home, Roo Island.

As of October 2004, the Blumaroo is ranked 32nd out of 50 species, with over 1.5 million created. They have been featured in two pieces of merchandise so far, not including the Neopets TCG game.

They can be painted in 35 different colors, including the seahorse-inspired Maraquan style, and Halloween, in spooky imitation of Count Von Roo himself.

Blumaroos are native to a small island appropriately named Roo Island, which is just off the coast of Neopia Central. The Island is ruled by the naïvely benevolent King Roo and his possibly malevolent councillor, Advisor Broo. While most Blumaroos are inherently pleasant creatures, there are a few evildoers among them. Most famous of these are Commander Garoo, second only to Dr. Sloth himself in power. He is the sixth Defenders of Neopia mission. There is also Count Von Roo, a vampire who rises at midnight to fight in the Battledome and dice with the brave. To win his game will gain you a Neoboards Avatar and a level for your pet, but to lose can have severe consequences.

Bori

The Bori is the 49th Neopet, and was released in October 2004 to coincide with the Terror Mountain plot. Boris are an underground armadillo like race with fox-like heads and furry bodies who have been kept in an enchanted sleep by some strange forces since Neopia's creation. Only now are they being awoken.

Bori is not a limited edition pet, but their promotional colour is, more specifically their exclusive ice colour which could only be accessed by American users who took part in a Yahoo! Toolbar promotion. It is ranked 41st out of 49 species, with over 500 thousand created. They are quiet and peaceful Neopets.

One famous Bori is Armin the Small from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot.

Bruce

The Bruce is one of the original Neopets. It first looked like Bruce Forsyth (an actual photograph), and has been redrawn many times, first to a caricature of Bruce Forsyth, and then turned into a penguin, retaining a bowtie. Despite their ungainly appearance, Bruces are generally good at sports and love to dance. They originally came from the snow-covered Terror Mountain region.

Bruces are quite popular on Neopets; as of October 2004, they were the 14th most popular out of forty-nine available species. Over 3.6 million have been created.

Some of the most famous ones include Brucey B, the owner of a lucky coin and the penguin who discovered the Lost Desert. Another famous one is Boochi, who zaps pets and can turn them into babies.

Buzz

The Buzz is a dragonfly-like species of Neopet. Buzz (the plural, according to Neopets, is not Buzzes) have excellent eyesight and can fly very quickly, allowing them to easily obtain the berries they love to eat.

When first introduced, the pet now called the Buzz was called the Fleye, which looked like a giant flying eyeball. Since most people think they look unattractive, they are relatively rare in Neopia, Buzz are particularly popular with male players.

Over 1.4 million have been created. As of October 2004, the Buzz is ranked 34th out of 49 species.

Chia

Chias are generally playful and friendly little creatures who love to explore. The name Chia may be related to the Chia Pet-like tufts of hair on top of their heads.

The very first Neopet, Thyassa the Chia, was "born" on November 14, 1999 (the day before the site was officially opened). Chias appear to be great favorites with Neopets staff and are available in a wide array of variations (not available to any other pet species) that look like fruits and vegetables. (For example, there is an Orange Chia, which looks like an actual orange instead of simply being orange in color.) More recently, Neopets staff have added the Durian and the Carrot Chia. Chias are well know for being the food of Lupes, and perhaps that accounts for the many colours, or rather flavours, of Chias.

Famous Chias include the Chia Clown, the easiest of the battledome challengers and what beginners practice on, Florg, a Mutant Chia who loves nothing better than eating petpets and stars in his own game (Feed Florg), Adee, the star of the new game Ice Cream Machine, and Mika and Carassa, a pair of Chias that live in Terror Mountain and have run a garage sale for years, despite claims they wish to move to warmer climates, arousing some suspicion as to their true motives.

They are of roughly average popularity among players. As of October 2004, the Chia is ranked 26th out of 49 species. Over 1.8 million have been created.

Chomby

The Chomby is a limited-edition Neopet. Chombies come from Tyrannia and appear to be a variety of dinosaur, looking something like a cross between a Diplodocus and a Stegosaurus. They are generally shy creatures, preferring to quietly munch on leaves.

Because they are limited edition, Chombies are rare in Neopia. A few Chombies are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain magical items to change their pets into Chombies.

As of October 2004, the Chomby is ranked 44th out of 49 species. Barely over 300 thousand have been created.

Cybunny

The Cybunny is a limited edition species of Neopet. They look much like rabbits and often live in Neopia's coldest regions, where they can easily camouflage their white fur against the snow. Young Cybunnies generally love to play games.

Because they are limited edition, Cybunnies are rare in Neopia. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain magical items to change their pets into Cybunnies.

Some famous Cybunnies are Cylara, a space traveler, and the Easter Bunny.

As of October 2004, the Cybunny is ranked 41st out of 49 species. Barely more than 400 thousand have been created.

External link

Draik

The Draik is another limited edition species. They look like small dragons and are thought to have originated from Meridell.

Draiks are never released. Not even on Draik Day, their special holiday. You can only get a Draik by using a morphing potion (a special potion to change your Neopet)or using a Draik Egg and hatching it in the Draik Nest...

As of October 2004, the Draik is ranked 48th out of 49 species. Just over 9 thousand have been created.

Elephante

The Elephante is just one of the many fictional creatures known as Neopets (a type of virtual pet). As their name suggests, Elephantes takes the form of elephants with two small wings. Although cute, they are not completely harmless, being able to shoot objects from their trunks. They are generally kind and generous.

An Elephante and Puppyblew (a Petpet) star in the game [200m Peanut Dash (http://www.neopets.com/games/puppyblew.phtml)]

As of October 2004, the Elephante is ranked 27th out of 49 species. Over 1.8 million have been created.

Eyrie

The Eyrie looks basically like an eagle-winged griffin. Eyries originate in tropical regions and like to play, but like their mythological counterparts, they can be quite fierce at times.

Eyries are among the most popular Neopets. As of October, 2004, they were ranked 8th most popular out of forty-nine available species. Over 4 million have been created.

It should be noted that oddly, the randomly generated heights applied to all Eyries deviate greatly from the average number of Neopets. Judging from a selected statistic, Eyries are on average the largest of all Neopets. Flotsams are as large as the average Eyrie's eye.

The pet now called the Eyrie was originally named the Cerpull, which looked more like a dragon than a griffin. It was first changed into the more gentle Tatsu before being completely redesigned to form the current Eyrie.

Famous (or rather, infamous) Eyries include Lord Kass, of the Neopian Darigan Citadel.

External link

Flotsam

The Flotsam is apparently related to another aquatic Neopet, the Jetsam. Dolphin-like in appearance, Flotsams love to swim the Neopian oceans, and are quick to sense danger.

On average, Flotsams are the shortest of all Neopets. The average Flotsam is, judging by a selected statistic, as large as the average Eyrie's eye.

Flotsams are of average popularity among players. As of October 2004, the Flotsam is ranked 24th out of 49 species. Over 2.1 million have been created.

Gelert

The Gelert is a dog-like species of Neopet. Its name comes from the legendary Welsh dog. Gelerts are generally courageous and faithful.

Gelerts are among the most popular Neopets. As on January, 2005, they were ranked sixth in popularity out of forty-nine available species. Over 5,700,000 have been created.

The pet now known as the Gelert was originally called the Polypup.

External link

Grarrl

A Grarrl closely resembles a Tyrannosaurus rex and can be created by players in one of four primary colors, as can all Neopets. They come from the Neopian world of Tyrannia. They are generally among the strongest and fiercest Neopets and can eat just about anything.

Overall, Grarrls are of roughly average popularity; they are especially popular with male Neopets players. As of October 2004, the Grarrl is ranked 17th out of 49 species. Over 2.9 million have been created.

Grarrl characters in Neopia include Galgarath, the General of Lord Darigan's army, as well as Grarrg the Tyrannian Battlemaster.

External link

Grundo

Grundos look like space aliens. They were originally imprisoned by the evil Dr. Sloth, who transformed them into large, ugly servants. They are, however, naturally friendly, although not the brightest.

Grundos are unique among the various species of Neopets in that they must be adopted from the Virtupets Space Station (instead of created in the usual way). There they are available in seven different colors instead of the four available to other pets. The reason for this unusual situation is that they were originally adopted by players as part of one of Neopets' stories, in order to put a stop to one of Dr. Sloth's evil schemes.

Some famous Grundos are Gorix, partner to Cylara, and Blarthrox, a Virtupets producer from the old Neopet v2 plot.

As of March 2005, the Grundo ranked 9th out of 49 species on the site. Over 4.5 million have been created.

External link

Hissi

The Hissi is a snake-like Neopet with wings. It was released May 4, 2005. Hissi have acute vision and a keen sense of smell which makes them extremely good at games of hide and seek.

Because they are limited edition, not very many are available at the moment.

Ixi

The Ixi is basically goat-like. They originally came from the Neopian world of Meridell and were the forty-sixth species introduced on the site. Before the introduction of the Yurble and Ruki in May and July of 2004, Ixi enjoyed the status of newest species for almost two years.

Ixi are among the most popular species, particularly among female players. As of October 2004, the Ixi ranked 7th out of 49 species on the site. Over 4 million have been created.

External link

Jetsam

Jetsams are shark-like creatures, possibly related to the similarly aquatic Flotsam. They tend to be unfriendly and are powerful fighters.

Because they are limited edition, Jetsams are rare in Neopia. A few may be made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain magical items to change their pets into Jetsams.

As of October 2004, the Jetsam ranked 40th out of 49 species on the site. About 600 thousand have been created.

JubJub

JubJubs look basically like furry balls of fluff with large feet. They initially come in four basic colors: red, blue, yellow, and green. More exotic colors are possible, such as Coconut (which causes the JubJub to look like a coconut) and Halloween (which causes it to look like a jack o'lantern).

JubJubs are generally shy creatures. When threatened, they can move (by rolling) with astonishing speed.

The JubJub attained its name from the beast in a Lewis Carroll poem, the Jabberwocky, from the JubJub bird.

The pet that is now known as the JubJub was originally called the JibJib.

As of October 2004, the Jubjub ranked 15th out of 49 species on the site. Over 3.6 million have been created.

External link

Kacheek

The Kacheek looks like something between a teddy bear and a mouse. Kacheeks are generally shy, calm, and peaceful creatures.

Kacheeks are among the most popular Neopets. As of October, 2004, they were rated the second most popular species. With well over 7.2 million created, they account for 5.88 percent of the Neopet population.

The pet now known as the Kacheek was originally known as the Badeek, which had more prominent dark glasses and a less cheerful attitude.

External link

Kau

The Kau, unsurprisingly, looks like a cow (the name is also pronounced the same way). Kaus generally move in herds and enjoy singing.

Originally, the pet now known as the Kau was named Macy Gray and was designed to look like the singer. Whether for copyright reasons or because the original was not intended to be more than a passing joke, it was changed to the Kau fairly quickly.

As of October 2004, the Kau ranked 19th out of 49 species on the site. Over 2.9 million have been created.

External link

Kiko

Kikos are amphibious and look basically like small floating spheres with hands, eyes, and bandages. As adults, they like to be nearby water, and as babies they cannot leave it for long.

They are of roughly average popularity among players and are limited edition. Periodically a few Kikos may be released on the site; players can also change their pets into Kikos using certain magical items.

Famous Kikos include Niten Hiroru, the Ninja and the skeleton kiko from the destruction of Maraqua.

Krawk

Resembling large lizards or crocodiles in appearance, most Krawks come from Krawk Island. Krawks are generally loyal but mischievous, and boast many sharp teeth.

Young Krawks are transformed into adults using the magic of the Krawk Island "Fungus Cave". In game terms, this means that they are "restricted" species and cannot be created by players in the usual way. As a result, they are the rarest species of Neopet but remain highly sought-after.

As of October 2004, roughly 2 thousand have been created.

Koi

Friendly, outgoing, inventive fish, Koi (the name is both singular and plural) were the natives of the underwater city of Maraqua prior to its destruction. Their many inventions include the Utilty Fish, described as 'a Petpet and a household helper rolled into one'.

Because they are limited edition, Koi are rare in Neopia. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain magical items to change their pets into Koi.

Famous Koi include King Kelpbeard, ruler of the city of Maraqua.

Korbat

Korbats look like white bats with colored wings and ears, although certain special versions come in other colors. With small, pointed teeth, they look vaguely vampiric but are generally friendly. They are nocturnal and are usually inquisitive and mischievous.

Korbats are of average popularity on the site, but they are particularly popular with male players.

Famous Korbats include: Koya (from the Neopets Trading Card Game), Barallus from the game Cellblock, and Lord Darigan, though whether or not Darigan is truly a Korbat is uncertain.

External link

Kougra

The Kougra looks like a small tiger. Kougras come from the Neopian World of Mystery Island, where they enjoy eating fruit, despite their carnivorous appearance. They also like to practice pouncing.

Kougras are among the most popular species. As of June 2005, they were rated the second most popular species (well behind the Shoyru and neck-to-neck with the Kacheek).

It is not unusual for the Neopets staff to give an older pet a "makeover". The Kougra's case, however, is somewhat special. The original redesign was released in summer of 2004, but many players were not happy with the design, so another redesign was planned and in August players were given the opportunity to vote.

Kyrii

Kyrii (the word serves as both singular and plural) are pack animals but get along well with other species. Their origin is uncertain; they are said to have appeared in Neopia without any notice one day, where they immediately started to make friends.

Originally, the pet now called the Kyrii was known as the Fuzio, but it was changed because of copyright issues. The Fuzio had a very different look; it was basically a ball of fluff (similar to the JubJub), with floating, detached gloves and sneakers.

One of the most famous Kyrii is Jacques, Garin's friend from the Curse of Maraqua plot.

External link

Lenny

The Lenny is a bird-like Neopet, possibly based on a stork. There are also versions available that look like different bird species, such as flamingos and parrots. They are generally curious, clever, and intelligent.

Lennies are among the rarest species, even though they are not limited edition. However, some Lenny owners tend to be particularly proud of their unusual pets. Many people like making jokes about this 'nerdy' Neopet.

Lupe

The Lupe looks like a wolf and its name probably comes from the Latin word lupus ("wolf"). Lupes make particularly loyal pets. They are known for their love of eating Chias.

Lupes are among the most popular species. As of October 2004, 2004, they were the fourth most popular pet with approximately 6.4 million created. Some Neopet users believe Lupes and Gelerts are related.

Famous Lupes include the assassinated King Coltzan III; Jeran, a knight of the Neopian world of Meridell; Captain Scarblade, the pirate from the new Curse of Maraqua storyline, and Tormund, a knight-in-training who is due to star in the upcoming Neopets: The Darkest Faerie video game.

External link

Lutari

This is an unreleased species that resembles an otter. The Lutari is expected to be released very soon, there are several theories as to why it hasn't appeared yet, as the graphics are available. A popular theory is that they are waiting until when they want Lutari day to be (as each pet has a day of the year devoted to them, and with newer pets these have been on the day they were released - like a Neopet birthday). Another theory is that they want the make other colours for the Lutari for when they release it (so it will fit in with the other pets by being paintable, rather than just coming in the four basic colours). A third theory is that the Neopets team is still not happy with the name 'Lutari', and this is just a placeholder name.

A Blue Lutari runs the Ice Cream Shop. Most people presumed this to be a Maraquan species (as there is a Maraquan storyline currently running, and it would make sense to release the Lutari when an appropriate plot is happening). However, an editorial in the Neopian Times stated that the Lutari species "is part of something special that will be released in the Summer." It is possible that it will be released in tandem with the most popular of the April Fool's Day pets (see below).

External link

Meerca

The Meerca is probably based on a meerkat, or maybe a mouse, with a particularly large tail. They are known to be mischievous, with a love for pranks and general silliness. Occasionally, this results in mischief of a criminal nature, and the Meerca brothers Heermeedjet and Meerouladen are famed for their part in the theft of King Coltzan's crown.

Famous Meercas include Heermeedjet and Meerouladen, the thieves responsible for stealing Coltzan's crown.

As of September 2004, over 2.5 million Meercas have been created.

Moehog

The Moehog looks something like a warthog. Moehogs originally came from the mountainous parts of Neopia, where they carried objects for lazy Skeiths. After a while, however, they began to set up their own communities elsewhere, but they remain eager to help. Young Moehogs generally enjoy snorting up dust clouds and making noise.

As of October 2004, only around 850,000 moehogs have been created.

External link

Mok

This name was used as a temporary placeholder for the Lutari pet. See Lutari.

Mynci

The monkey-like Mynci is a fun-loving creature with great agility and balance.

Myncis are popular among players; as of September 2004, they were ranked eleventh out of forty-eight available species.

The pet now known as the Mynci was originally called the Mellish before its remake into the Mynci due to lack of popularity (which was probably due to the fact that it looked like a cartoon person and not a pet).

External link

Nimmo

Nimmos are spiritual and very intelligent; they value peace and friendship. Nimmos looks similar to frogs with long, thin arms and legs.

Nimmos are of roughly average popularity among players.

External link

Poogle

The Poogle is a four-legged species that may be very loosely based on the Poodle But it isn't. They originally came from the northern Terror Mountain region. Although they are cute in appearance, they have very sharp teeth.

Because they are limited edition, Poogles are rare in Neopia. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain magical items to change their pets into Poogles.

Pteri

The Pteri is a prehistoric, long-tailed bird, are most often found in the tree of Tyrannia. Pterii are generally very playful and enjoy playing tricks on passers-by.

As of October 2004, the Pteri ranked 29th out of 49 species on the site. Over 1.7 million have been created.

Quiggle

Quiggles look like frogs with large feet and tiny front legs. (The other frog-like species, the Nimmo, is quite distinct with its long arms and legs.) They are fun-loving creatures are usually seen wearing enormous grins. They love water and particularly enjoy fresh vegetables.

Quiggles are roughly are average in popularity. The pet now known as the Quiggle was originally called the Frogstomp.

External link

Ruki

The Ruki is the second insect-like Neopet, but is more clearly an insect than the Buzz; according to staff it was intended to resemble a praying mantis. Rukis originally came from the Lost Desert region.

The Ruki is the forty-eighth Neopets species, released on July 29, 2004.

External link

Skeith

The Skeith resembles a large, fat pig with dragon wings. Skeiths are generally strong, lazy and unpleasant, although individual members of the species may behave quite differently. They will eat practically anything, so owners learn to keep them well fed.

The Manager of the National Neopian Bank is a Skeith, possibly related to the tale of dragons hoarding away gold.

King Hagan of Brightvale and King Skarl of the much overused and abused Meridell are also Skeiths.

Techo

The Techo looks like a large gecko. Techos are almost always happy, and they love to make other people laugh. They are very agile and are often good at acrobatics.

Techos are especially popular with male players.

External link

Tonu

The Tonu resembles a rhinoceros with a mane. They originated in the Neopian world of Tyrannia, where they hatch from giant eggs.

Tonu are the most common of the limited edition pets. A small number are made available on the site from time to time; players can also use certain magical items to turn their pets into Tonu.

Tuskaninny

Tuskaninnies look like walruses. Despite their names, they usually have no tusks (the Tyrannian Tuskaninny is an exception). They are often found in the water or lounging in the sun and are generally friendly, although they can become fighters.

Tuskaninnies are among the most rare pets, although they are not limited edition.

Uni

Unis look like winged unicorns. With their long manes and tails, they are generally somewhat vain.

Unis are among the most popular Neopets, particularly with female players. As of April 2005, they are the fifth most popular out of forty-nine available species.

Usul

The Usul resembles a large squirrel with a colored ruff and a bow in its tail. Usuls prefer to live in trees; they love visitors and are very friendly. They have their own series of dolls, the Barbie-like Usukis. (There is also a Quiggle-inspired Quiguki, which is intended as a joke.) Every year on August 20th, the site holds an imaginary event called UsukiCon, which may be a reference to UshiCon. UsukiCon consists of Neopets.com releasing several new Usuki doll sets and Usuki-themed items.

Usuls are extremely popular with female players. Strangely, one of the more famous Usuls is a boy- Garin the pirate from the Curse of Maraqua plot.

Another famous usul is Hannah from the games Hannah and the Pirate Caves and Hannah and the Ice Caves. A plot was also based around Hannah for Hannah and the Ice Caves.

Wocky

Wockies are catlike pets, with small manes of fir. Wockies are generally brave, adventurous, and daring. They love to explore and search for hidden treasures.

Wockies are of roughly average popularity among players.

External link

Yurble

The Yurble looks somewhat like an extremely furry bear, with curled horns or else ears that resemble horns. Yurbles are generally curious and love to eat.

Yurbles were first "discovered" May 28, 2004. They were the 47th species to be released.

External link

Zafara

The adventurous Zafara is rumored to bring good luck to its owner. Zafaras seem to resemble kangaroos. They are of slightly above-average popularity among players.

As of October 2004, the Zafara ranked 16th out of 49 species on the site. Over 3.3 million have been created.

April Fools Joke

On April 1, 2005, the Neopets staff played a joke on members where they released approximately 50 new Neopets. However, this was just a joke. The complete list of fake Neopets can be found here (http://neopets.com/possiblepets.phtml).

By popular demand, one of these fake pets will be made into a real one. Other popular fake pets are being made into PetPets. Players were able to vote on which fake pet they want to see released as a real pet. The voting is now closed (as of late May 2005).
