Burtonsville, Maryland

Burtonsville is a census-designated place and an uncorporated area located in Montgomery County, Maryland. It takes its name from Isaac Burton, who with his wife Keturah established a settlement in the 19th century. The area was originally known as "Burton's."

As an unincorporated area, Burtonsville's boundaries are not officially defined. Burtonsville is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°6'27" North, 76°56'3" West (39.107475, -76.934115)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 20.6 km² (8.0 mi²). 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.88% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,305 people, 2,480 households, and 1,919 families residing in the area. The population density is 361.1/km² (935.1/mi²). There are 2,533 housing units at an average density of 125.2/km² (324.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 52.05% White, 25.42% African American, 0.22% Native American, 17.62% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 3.04% from two or more races. 5.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,480 households out of which 45.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% are non-families. 16.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.94 and the average family size is 3.34.

In the area, the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the area is $73,241, and the median income for a family is $76,862. Males have a median income of $52,003 versus $41,133 for females. The per capita income for the area is $26,614. 2.5% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 1.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
