The Brünigbahn (SBB Brünig) was the only narrow gauge railway of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and passes through Interlaken over Brienz, Meiringen, the Brünigpass, Giswil, Alpnachstad after Lucerne. Their track width amounts to 1000 mm (1 m).
The building of the distance took place via the Jura-Berne-Luzern-Bahn (JBL), which opened in 1888 the section between Brienz over the Bruenigpass to Alpnachstad. Initially only connection insisted to steam ships betwreen Lake Brienz and Lake Lucerne. In 1889, the Alpnachstad - Lucerne line was opened. With the transition of the JBL to the SBB in 1903, the all-season enterprise was introduced. Only in the year 1914 the last section between Brienz and Interlaken followed. In the years 1941 and 1942 the track became electrified.
The Brünigbahn drives on a common station with that in Interlaken, the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB). In Brienz the starting point of the Brienz Rothorn Bahn beside the station (BRB) is. A small piece beside the station Meiringen begins the Meiringen-Innertkirchen-Bahn (MIB). Alpnachstad is starting point of the Pilatus Railway. The section between Hergiswil and Lucerne is driven on together with the Luzern-Stans-Engelberg-Bahn (LSE).
