Bridgeport, New York

Bridgeport is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Sullivan in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 1,665.

Bridgeport is east of Oneida Park, a hamlet in the Town of Cicero in Onondaga County, New York.

Geography

Chittenango Creek, west of Bridgeport is the boundary between the Madison and Onondaga counties.

Bridgeport is located at 43°9'16" North, 75°58'30" West (43.154472, -75.974888)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,665 people, 639 households, and 431 families residing in the hamlet. The population density is 353.2/km² (912.4/mi²). There are 685 housing units at an average density of 145.3/km² (375.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 96.10% White, 1.20% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 0.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 639 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the community the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $31,358, and the median income for a family is $42,337. Males have a median income of $26,970 versus $26,316 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,761. 12.2% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
