Brewton is a city located in Escambia County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 5,498. The city is the county seat of Escambia County.

Geography
Brewton is located at 31°7'4" North, 87°4'16" West (31.117706, -87.071164)Template:GR.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.7 km² (11.5 mi²). 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.22% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,498 people, 2,216 households, and 1,471 families residing in the city. The population density is 187.4/km² (485.2/mi²). There are 2,543 housing units at an average density of 86.7/km² (224.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 57.60% White or Caucasian, 40.23% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,216 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% are married couples living together, 17.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,234, and the median income for a family is $43,548. Males have a median income of $37,348 versus $20,212 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,185. 16.3% of the population and 12.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.3% of those under the age of 18 and 18.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
City Schools
Brewton Elementary School, part of the Brewton City School System, is located on Douglas Ave. in Brewton, Alabama.
Brewton Middle School, part of the Brewton City School System, is located on Liles Blvd. in Brewton, Alabama. Brewton Middle School competed in the 2005 Regional Science Olympiad at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. The school took three teams, Team A, Team B, and Team C to this Regional Tournament. All three teams qualified to go to the Alabama Statewide Science Olympiad at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. At the state tournament, Team A took 2nd place overall, only behind Auburn Junior High School. This qualified Brewton Middle School Team A to go to the National Science Olympiad in Champaign, Illinois. At this National Tournament, Brewton Middle School placed 35th overall. About 60 teams competed at this National Science Olympiad.
