Brest voblast on Belarus map
Brest voblast is one of the administrative regions in the Republic of Belarus located in the south-west of Belarus bordering on Poland and Ukraine. Brest, which is located on the Western Bug River, is the capital of this administrative region (voblast). Brest is the Western gate to Belarus linking an isolated, post Soviet dictatorship — known as the "last dictatorship in Europe" — to the European Union.
The sixteen districts of the Brest voblast are: District of Brest, District of Kamenets, District of Malaryta, District of Zhabinka, District of Pruzhany, District of Kobrin, District of Drahichyn, District of Biaroza, District of Ivatsevichy, District of Ivanava, District of Baranavichy, District of Liakhavichy, District of Hantsavichy, District of Luninets, District of Pinsk, and District of Stolin.
It is bordered on the west by Poland, on the south by Ukraine, to the north by the Hrodna voblast, Minsk voblast, and to the east by the Homyel voblast.
Brest voblast belongs to the area known as Polesie.
Area: 32.7 thousand sq. km. Population: about 1.5 million (2002).
