Breitung Township, Minnesota

Breitung Township is a township located in St. Louis County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 662.
The township is named after Edward Breitung, a miner in Michigan and former U.S. Representative from that state, who in the 1880s helped to develop the Soudan Mine in the township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 100.6 km² (38.8 mi²). 59.6 km² (23.0 mi²) of it is land and 41.1 km² (15.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 40.80% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 662 people, 292 households, and 190 families residing in the township. The population density is 11.1/km² (28.8/mi²). There are 523 housing units at an average density of 8.8/km² (22.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.89% White, 0.45% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 292 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.75.
In the township the population is spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 110.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $40,750, and the median income for a family is $51,250. Males have a median income of $40,000 versus $29,107 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,134. 17.3% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
