Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 51.0 km² (19.7 mi²). 41.5 km² (16.0 mi²) of it is land and 9.4 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.50% water.
The Town of Boylston is approximately 10.5 square miles and consists of 12,652.8 acres (51 km²). With a population of approximately 4400 residents, the town is predominately a residential community. The Wachusett Reservoir, Boston's water source, lies in the northwestern part of the town and covers about 5000 acres (20 km²) of land. The town maintains approximately 45 miles of roadway, has 9 miles of sidewalks, and has its own Municipal Light Department, Water District, and volunteer fire and ambulance service.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,008 people, 1,573 households, and 1,140 families residing in the town. The population density is 96.5/km² (250.0/mi²). There are 1,606 housing units at an average density of 38.7/km² (100.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.71% White, 0.67% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,573 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $67,703, and the median income for a family is $77,604. Males have a median income of $56,019 versus $43,277 for females. The per capita income for the town is $32,274. 2.8% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
