Boston is a town located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,897.

The Town of Boston is an interior town of the county and one of the county's "Southtowns."

History

The Town of Boston was organized in 1817 from part of the Town of Eden.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.8 km² (35.8 mi²). 92.8 km² (35.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

U.S. Route 219 crosses the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,897 people, 2,997 households, and 2,244 families residing in the town. The population density is 85.1/km² (220.4/mi²). There are 3,122 housing units at an average density of 33.6/km² (87.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.91% White, 0.14% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,997 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $48,315, and the median income for a family is $57,714. Males have a median income of $42,101 versus $27,798 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,303. 5.9% of the population and 3.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Boston Forest County Park -- An undeveloped conservation area in the southwest corner of the town.
  • East Boston Hill -- A location near the eastern town line.
  • Eighteen Mile Creek -- A stream that flows northward throught the town.
  • North Boston -- The hamlet of North Boston, located by the northern town line.
  • Patchen -- A hamlet located near the town's center on the Boston State Road.
  • Ski Tamarack -- A skiing location in the northeast corner of the town.
