Borough of Queenscliffe
|
The Borough of Queenscliffe is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the southern part of the state, south-east of Geelong on the Bellarine Peninsula. It has an area of 12.0 square kilometres. In 2001 it had a population of 3,506. It is the smallest municipality in Victoria in both area and population.
It is the last Borough left in Victoria, and was the only LGA to escape change in the mass Victorian munincipality reorganisation of the early 90's. This was enacted by Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett. If the rules applied everywhere else in the state were applied here, it would have become part of the City of Greater Geelong.
It has been argued that Queenscliffe survived because it's the home to a large number of retired Liberal Party members who have run the local council for years. Kennett didn't want to upset his party, or deprive himself a possible future mayorship.
