Bolton is a town located in Warren County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,117.

Geography

The east town line, defined by Lake George is the border of Washington County, New York. This town line includes the lake so that only the opposite shore is in Washington County. The town in within the Adirondack State Park.

US Route 9N follows the lake along the west shore, connecting the major settlements. Interstate highway 87, the Northway, runs along the west town line.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 233.3 km² (90.1 mi²). 164.2 km² (63.4 mi²) of it is land and 69.1 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,117 people, 941 households, and 628 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.9/km² (33.4/mi²). There are 2,164 housing units at an average density of 13.2/km² (34.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.02% White, 0.57% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 941 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.70.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 32.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,935, and the median income for a family is $52,667. Males have a median income of $35,268 versus $23,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,492. 5.6% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Bolton Landing -- This hamlet is the major community in the town. It is located on the shore of Lake George on Route 9N.
  • Cat Mountain -- A mountain in the southwest part of the town.
  • Green Island -- An island in Lake George by Bolton Landing.
  • Huddle Bay -- A bay south of Bolton hamlet.
  • North Bolton -- A hamlet northwest of Bolton Landing.
  • Northwest Bay -- A bay in Lake George north of Bolton Landing.
  • Riverbank -- A hamlet on the west town line.
  • Tongue Mountain Range -- A series of mountains forming a peninsula into Lake George and helps create Northwest Bay. The mountain consists of five peaks (from north to south): Brown Mountain, Fivemile Mountain, Fifth Peak, French Point Mountain, and First Peak.
  • Trout Lake -- A lake in the south-central part of the town.
