Bolívar is derived from Simón Bolívar, one of the principal figures of the Latin American civil wars so called of independence; the Republic of Bolivia and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are named after him, as are a number of other things, mainly in the Western Hemisphere.

A local movement asked for its separation and in 30 november 2004, Biscayne local government has approved its independence. Bolívar/Bolibar is to be the capital of the municipality of Ziortza-Bolibar.
