Bobby Newmark

Bobby Newmark is one of the main characters in the William Gibson novel Count Zero. His nick in the Matrix is Count Zero, where the novel gets its name.
At the beginning of the novel, Bobby is a smalltime cowboy (hacker), who wants to be a big name in the Matrix. He buys an "ICE breaker" (hacking device), unaware that it is actually stolen military equipment and he is its unwitting test dummy, but his test run ends up nearly killing him. At the last moment Bobby is rescued by a girl, Angela Mitchell, who is somehow able to enter the Matrix without using a deck (computer). Almost immediately after, there is a rocket attack on his apartment that nearly kills Bobby, and he flees. This eventually leads to Bobby getting involved with a scheme to kidnap Angela from her father's corporation stronghold. Bobby teams up with Angela and the mercenary Turner, as they are drawn into the plans of a mysterious order who appear to work for loa (voodoo idols, but actually these are advanced AIs) inside the Matrix. Bobby and Angela become lovers.
In the third Sprawl novel, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Bobby, now eight years older, only plays a passive role: he is strapped into an immense machine, which is actually a VR device. Near the end of the story Bobby meets Angela again; they had not seen each other for several years.
