Black River is a village located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,285.
The Village of Black River (previously called Lockport) is on the border of the Town of Le Ray and the Town of Rutland.
Geography
The village is located adjacent to the Black River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.16% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,285 people, 521 households, and 373 families residing in the village. The population density is 274.1/km² (709.8/mi²). There are 556 housing units at an average density of 118.6/km² (307.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.98% White, 2.65% African American, 0.47% Native American, 2.72% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 521 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.89.
In the village the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.
