Birkirkara

Birkirkara is a city of 25,000 inhabitants located in central Malta. It is the largest city on the island on the island. The village consists of three autonomous parishes - St. Helen, St. Joseph and St. Mary. It also houses one of the most famous colleges in Malta - St. Aloysius' College. Birkirkara is the hometown of President Edward Fenech Adami and Opposition Leader Dr. Alfred Sant.
The city's motto is IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, which means "with this sign you win". It is refering to the cross which represents Christ's cruxifiction. The emblem of Birkirkara is a plain red cross with a crown on the top.
There are many places of interest in Birkirkara among which are the Old Railway Station, which today is a magnificent public garden. One must note that in olden times trains were used as means of transportation up to 1931 (Malta was still a British colony). Also, one can check out the Aqueducts found near Mriehel. One must not forget to visit St Helen's basilica, one of the most beautiful churches on the Maltese islands. It also boasts Malta's biggest bell.
Birkirkara can be written "B'Kara" for short. It has been the largest populated city in Malta since the Middle Ages. The main religious feast is St. Helen, which is celebrated on the 18th of August.
