Bergen is a town located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,182.
The Town of Bergen was incorporated in 1813 from part of the Town of Murray and is in the northeast corner of the county. There is also a village of Bergen in the town.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.6 km² (27.6 mi²). 71.6 km² (27.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.
Bergen Swamp, a glacial feature now kept as a wildlife preserve, is home to a small endangered rattlesnake, the Eastern Massasauga, as well as a large diversity of other species.
The eastern town line is the border of Monroe County, New York and the northern town line is the border of both Monroe County and Orleans County, New York.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,182 people, 1,196 households, and 857 families residing in the town. The population density is 44.5/km² (115.2/mi²). There are 1,240 housing units at an average density of 17.3/km² (44.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.27% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,196 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.14.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $49,412, and the median income for a family is $54,012. Males have a median income of $36,913 versus $26,571 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,932. 4.1% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
