Belmont is a city located in Gaston County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,705. Belmont is home to Belmont Abbey College.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.3 km² (8.2 mi²). 20.9 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.82% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,705 people, 3,348 households, and 2,226 families residing in the city. The population density is 416.0/km² (1,077.3/mi²). There are 3,552 housing units at an average density of 169.7/km² (439.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.39% White, 10.07% African American, 0.26% Native American, 2.98% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,348 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $38,819, and the median income for a family is $46,765. Males have a median income of $32,388 versus $25,213 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,065. 9.5% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.3% of those under the age of 18 and 14.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
