Bay City is a city located in Bay County, Michigan, at the base of Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,817. It is the county seat of Bay County6.
The Scottish band, the Bay City Rollers were named after this city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²). 27.0 km² (10.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.12% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,817 people, 15,208 households, and 9,322 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,365.5/km² (3,537.1/mi²). There are 16,259 housing units at an average density of 603.0/km² (1,562.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.19% White, 2.72% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.47% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 6.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,208 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $30,425, and the median income for a family is $38,252. Males have a median income of $32,094 versus $21,494 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,550. 14.6% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
