Battle of Corrin

The Battle of Corrin was the climactic battle of the Butlerian Jihad, ending in human victory and the destruction of the Omnius Evermind. The battle was led by Supreme Bashar (formerly Primero) Vorian Atreides, and his subordinate Bashar Abulurd Harkonnen - the grandson of Xavier Harkonnen, who had perished when he decided to kill Grand Patriarch Iblis Ginjo. Before the battle, the Omnius Evermind - with the input of the independent robot Erasmus - threatens to kill the approximately 2 million human slaves on the planet, as well as Serena Butler (it is actually a clone created by the Tlulaxa researcher Rekur Van).

Despite the threat, Supreme Bashar Atreides decided to continue the attack, believing that the League of Nobles would be unable to summon the political will to finish off the last Evermind on Corrin otherwise. When Abulurd Harkonnen objected, the latter was relieved of command. However, Abulurd Harkonnen believed in delaying the attack to save the two million human hostages so strongly that he snuck out of his quarters and sabotaged the fire-control systems of the entire Vengeance Fleet. Despite all that, the humans prevail and the hostages do not die. The last evermind is destroyed; however, Omnius Prime manages to transmit a copy of itself into space.

It is conjectured that the seventh Dune book (see: Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune), written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, will introduce a form of Omnius as the enemy. It is not known whether this is what Frank Herbert would have wanted, and it conflicts with the characters Daniel and Marty, who were introduced in Chapterhouse: Dune as the most likely reason for the Honored Matres to return to the Old Empire.

This is where the rift between Houses Atreides and Harkonnen came from. Vorian Atreides was so angered by the actions Abulurd took that he renounced their friendship and suggested during Abulurd's trial for treason that the sentence be changed to that of cowardice - a suggestion promptly taken up and which resulted in Abulurd's exile to Lankiveil. There, when Abulurd - and his wife, and the rest of the village they were staying in - died of a fever, the Harkonnen sons were quick to blame the Atreides. Eventually, their myths grew into accepted fact and this was the direct cause of their vendetta against the Atreides.

House Corrino takes their name from this battle: Faykan Butler, then Viceroy, took the opportunity to combine the powers of Grand Patriarch and Viceroy into one title, and changed his name into Corrino in the process - taking credit for the victory which rightfully belonged to Vorian Atreides.
