Batesville, Indiana

Batesville is a city located partially in Franklin County, Indiana and partially in Ripley County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,033.

Hillenbrand Industries which consists of the Batesville Casket Company and Hospital Bed manufacturer Hil-Rom is headquarted in this city.

Geography

Batesville is located at 39°17'54" North, 85°13'17" West (39.298262, -85.221480)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.3 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.1 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.19% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,033 people, 2,240 households, and 1,581 families residing in the city. The population density is 400.2/km² (1,036.2/mi²). There are 2,335 housing units at an average density of 154.9/km² (401.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.17% White, 0.02% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,240 households out of which 37.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $50,115, and the median income for a family is $58,590. Males have a median income of $38,862 versus $29,127 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,892. 3.5% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
