Baruch

Baruch (בָּרוּךְ "Blessed", Standard Hebrew Baruḫ, Tiberian Hebrew Bārūḵ) is the name of three people in the Hebrew Bible:

Contents

Baruch son of Zabbai

In the Book of Nehemiah Baruch son of Zabbai is listed as helping Nehemiah to repair the walls of Jerusalem [1] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et35b03.htm). Later someone called Baruch seals the covenant with Nehemiah [2] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et35b10.htm) . These two may be the same person.

Baruch son of Col-Hozeh

In Nehemiah 11:15 Baruch son of Col-Hozeh is listed as a returned captive, from the Tribe of Judah [3] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et35b11.htm).

Baruch son of Neriah

Baruch (or Baruchiah) son of Neriah was the scribe of the prophet Jeremiah. See Jer [4] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et1145.htm), [5] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et1136.htm).

He acted in behalf of Jeremiah when Jeremiah was imprisoned (Jer [6] (http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et1136.htm))

In Christianity

The deuterocanonical Book of Baruch (considered by the Jews and most of the Protestants to be apocryphal) contains a work presented as a narrative of Baruch the son of Neriah, in Babylon, in the fifth year after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans.

The Apocalypse of Baruch is a separate work from the Book of Baruch, similarly presented as a narrative of Baruch.

He is said to have gone with Jeremiah to Egypt. Legend says that he died in Spain.

In Fiction

Baruch also refers to an angel who appears in the novel, The Amber Spyglass of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.

He appears with his lover, another angel called Balthamos. He was once the brother of Enoch, who was become the Regent, an angel known as Metatron. With Balthamos, Baruch has escaped from the Regent of The Authority in hopes of joining Lord Asriel's army of angels. They seek to bring the bearer of the Subtle Knife, Will Parry to Asriel and accompany Will without question when Will agrees to go to Asriel only after finding Lyra Belacqua.

Baruch's notable courageous and dedicated nature leads to a fight with the Regent. Fatally wounded and separated from Balthamos and Will, Baruch brings himself to Lord Asriel. After providing Asriel with critically important information, he dies. The last word he utters is "Balthamos".
