Baron Strange

The title Baron Strange has been created several times in the Peerage of England. Two creations, one in 1295 and another in 1325, had only one holder each, upon the death of whom they became extinct.
In 1299, John le Strange was granted the barony. The tenth Baron also inherited the title of Earl of Derby. The two titles remained united until the death of the fifth earl. His brother William inherited his earldom, which could only pass to heirs-male, but his baronial titles - Baron Strange, Baron Mohun of Dunster and Baron Stanley - which could pass to females as well as males, fell into abeyance between the late Earl's three daughters and their heirs. However, the sixth earl incorrectly assumed the title of Baron Strange. In 1628, the sixth earl's eldest son James was summoned to the House of Lords as Baron Strange by a writ of acceleration. Later, when it was discovered that the sixth earl's assumption of the title was erroneous, it was deemed that there were two baronies of Strange, one created in 1299 and then in abeyance, and another created accidentally in 1628.
James, Lord Strange later succeeded to the earldom of Derby, and the earldom and barony remained united until the death of the ninth earl, when the title fell into abeyance again. In 1714, all of the coheirs except Henrietta Ashburnham died, so she received the barony. Later, the Dukes of Atholl inherited the title. At the death of the ninth duke in 1962, the barony again became abeyant. In 1965, the Sovereign terminated the abeyance in favour of John Drummond, upon whose death the title again became abeyant. The title was once again called out of abyeance in 1986, in favour of Jean Cherry Drummond.
Meanwhile the barony created in 1299 continued to be abeyant until 1921, when the Sovereign terminated the abeyance in favour of Elizabeth Philipps. After her death, the barony devolved upon the second Viscount St Davids. (This barony is now more commonly known as Strange of Knokin).
