Barcelona May Days
|
From May 3rd to May 8th of 1937, factions on the "Republican" side of the Spanish Civil War engaged in violent street battles. It began when Communist-led police forces attempted to take over an anarchist run telephone building in Barcelona. The telephone workers fought back, setting up barricades and surrounding the Communist "Lenin Barracks." Five days of street fighting ensued. CNT workers were eventually persuaded to put down their arms by Garcia Oliver, amongst others.
The British author George Orwell describes these events, which he witnessed and took part in, in his famous book "Homage to Catalonia."
