Bananal Island
|
Bananal Island, or Ilha do Bananal is a large island in the state of Tocantins in Brazil.
Formed by two branches of the Araguay, Bananal is the largest river island in the world (at 20,000 km², it is twice the size of Lebanon or Jamaica).
Bananal is part of a national park and is a very popular destination for ecotourism. There are no roads on the island so the only transport is by boat.
In the last 50 years the native inhabitants of the island, of the Carajá tribe, have been reduced to a few hundreds. They are now vastly outnumbered by Brazilians of non-Indian descent.et:Bananal pt:Ilha do Bananal
