Baltimore-Washington Parkway
|
The Baltimore-Washington Parkway (B-W Parkway) is a federally owned freeway, operated by the National Park Service, running parallel to Interstate 95 between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC. Signs at its termini dedicate it to Gladys Noon Spellman. It connects in DC with U.S. Highway 50 (New York Avenue), with a connection to District of Columbia Route 295, a feeder route to I-295, via a short section of Maryland State Highway 201, just north of the border. At its north end, in the middle of the MD 175 interchange, it becomes Maryland State Highway 295 towards Baltimore. The route specifically prohibits commercial trucks (except on the short part along US 50 at its south end), and provides a significant commuter route within the Baltimore-Washington region. Two major users of the B-W Parkway are the National Security Agency and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, both of which have their own exits off of the parkway specifically for their respective employees only.
As on other federally maintained roads, signs are brown rather than the standard green and use serifs on their text, except at the I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) interchange.
Maryland State Highway 295, the Parkway's extension to Baltimore, is also called the Baltimore-Washington Parkway on signs.
