Bald Head Island, North Carolina

Bald Head Island is a village located on the east side of Cape Fear in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Compared to the bustling city of Wilmington to the north, Bald Head Island is a small, somewhat remote village. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. Cars are not allowed; instead residents drive modified electric golf carts. The village is revered for its picturesque nature and is a popular location for retirement. It was the primary filming location for the successful film Weekend at Bernie's in 1989, as well as being a major location in The Butcher's Wife in 1991. "Old Baldy," its out-of-service lighthouse, is the oldest still standing in the state, built in 1817. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 173.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 15.0 km² (5.8 mi²). 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.73% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 173 people, 88 households, and 71 families residing in the village. The population density is 15.6/km² (40.3/mi²). There are 599 housing units at an average density of 53.9/km² (139.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.38% White, 2.89% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 88 households out of which 5.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 77.3% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.97 and the average family size is 2.17.

In the village the population is spread out with 5.8% under the age of 18, 1.2% from 18 to 24, 11.0% from 25 to 44, 63.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 56 years. For every 100 females there are 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $62,083, and the median income for a family is $56,964. Males have a median income of $51,250 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $45,585. 10.3% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 40.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
