BBC Somerset Sound
|
BBC Somerset Sound is the BBC Local Radio service for the English counties of Somerset, North Somerset and North-East Somerset. Launched on April 11, 1988, it broadcasts from its new studios in Park St, Taunton on 1566 AM, as well as receiving programmes from Radio Bristol, the station that previously had Somerset Sound's earlier ill-fated pre-2002 1323MW frequency. For the many programmes dually broadcast with Radio Bristol, especially in the evening, these are also available on 95.5FM, or on DAB, from the Mendip transmitter in Somerset. The 1566MW transmitter is relatively weak, and all of Somerset Sound's programmes can only be heard in stereo if you listen via Real Player on their website. The BBC began broadcasts on FM in 1955, yet 50 years later, Somerset Sound can only be received as a whole, on MW. Maybe DAB will find its way to Somerset when a BBC engineer accidentally plugs a cable into the wrong socket.
