Avondale is a census-designated place located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,441. It is home to the large Avondale Shipyards, now controlled by Northrop Grumman.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.0 km² (5.8 mi²). 14.1 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.04% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,441 people, 1,726 households, and 1,439 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 385.5/km² (998.8/mi²). There are 1,811 housing units at an average density of 128.3/km² (332.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 63.70% White, 20.25% African American, 0.53% Native American, 12.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 4.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,726 households out of which 38.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% are non-families. 13.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.15 and the average family size is 3.44.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $35,917, and the median income for a family is $37,250. Males have a median income of $28,730 versus $21,936 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,518. 17.3% of the population and 15.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
