Aurora is a city located in St. Louis County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,850.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.56% water. It is surrounded by mixed coniferous/deciduous forest and is near man lakes.

Economy

Aurora is located on the Mesabi Range of northeastern Minnesota. Formerly this area produced a large quanitity of the nation's iron and taconite ore, but recently they have been depleted or become too expensive to mine. Recently a Blue Cross Blue Shield call center has been built in Aurora, and it is hoped that more jobs will come to the area.

Recreation

Aurora is located on the edge of the Superior National Forest, and is located two miles from Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort. Popular recreational activities of the residents of Aurora and nearby area include hunting, fishing, boating, four-wheeling, skiing, and snowboarding. There are many ATV and snowmobile trails on the outskirts of Aurora, and many of these go far, some all the way to Lake Superior.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,850 people, 812 households, and 495 families residing in the city. The population density is 188.0/km² (487.4/mi²). There are 893 housing units at an average density of 90.7/km² (235.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.38% White, 0.05% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 812 households out of which 22.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,094, and the median income for a family is $43,095. Males have a median income of $41,413 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,442. 11.9% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
