Athens is a town located in Greene County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,991.
The Town of Athens has a village also called Athens. The town is on the eastern end of the county.
Geography
The east town line is defined by the Hudson River and is the border of Columbia County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 74.7 km² (28.8 mi²). 67.8 km² (26.2 mi²) of it is land and 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.22% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,991 people, 1,600 households, and 1,110 families residing in the town. The population density is 58.9/km² (152.5/mi²). There are 1,972 housing units with an average density of 29.1/km² (75.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.87% White, 0.98% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,600 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.
