Ashland is a village located in Cass County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,361.
Geography
Ashland is located at 39°53'17" North, 90°0'32" West (39.887929, -90.008759)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,361 people, 546 households, and 386 families residing in the village. The population density is 710.1/km² (1,832.3/mi²). There are 581 housing units at an average density of 303.1/km² (782.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.60% White, 0.15% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 546 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the village the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. A turn-of-the-century sundown town. Until the early 1980s it had a sign on a road leading into town telling blacks they were not welcome in Ashland.
