Argyll (Earra-Ghaidheal in Gaelic), sometimes called Argyllshire, is one of the traditional counties of Scotland.
The historical county town is the town of Inveraray, which is still the seat of the Duke of Argyll. The principal towns are Oban, Campbeltown, Lochgilphead and Inveraray.
Ardnamurchan and Morvern, north of the Isle of Mull are part of the county. The islands of Muck, Rum, Canna and Sanday - the Small Isles - were part of the County until 1891 at which time they became part of Inverness-shire - along with Eigg.
The modern day council area of Argyll and Bute covers Argyll and the Isle of Bute (in the county of Buteshire), and the area to the west of Loch Lomond (part of Dunbartonshire). Its modern day administrative headquarters is at Lochgilphead.
