Anthony Adverse is a 1936 film based upon the novel by Hervey Allen. The story revolves around the adventures of a young oprhan in the early 19th century. It starred Fredric March in the title role, as well as Olivia de Havilland, Donald Woods, Anita Louise, Edmund Gwenn, Claude Rains, Louis Hayward, Gale Sondergaard, Steffi Duna, and Akim Tamiroff. It was adapted by Sheridan Gibney and Milton Krims, and directed by Mervyn LeRoy, with uncredited direction by Michael Curtiz.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In addition, Sondergaard won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
