Anderson Machado

Anderson Javier Machado [ma-CHA-do] (born January 25, 1981 in Caracas, Venezuela) is a Major League Baseball shortstop who has played for the Philadelphia Phillies (2003) and Cincinnati Reds (2004). He is a switch-hitter and throws right-handed.
Machado has soft hands, good range, a quick feet and a cannon for an arm. But he has hit the ball very little in the minors, being able to draw 108 walks and yet still find time to strikeout 120 times. His speed allows him to run the bases well, and he is adept at taking the extra base. He is a career .268 hitter with four RBI in 17 major league games.

- Shortstop Barry Larkin will not be offered another contract by Cincinnati, ending his 19-year tenure with his hometown team. The Reds have tried for several years to develop his successor, between others Machado, Felipe López and Ray Olmedo, rather than bring him back in 2005. On January 28th, Machado had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee, leaving former All-Star Rich Aurilia and López to compete for the starting shortstop job.
