American Eagle Outfitters is an American clothing retailer founded in 1977, it is now commonly referred to as the abbreviation 'AE'. Widely popular with the teenage population, some have criticized it for selling clothes at unreasonably high prices. The brand, targeted at 15 to 25 year-olds, sells high-quality casual clothing. American Eagle Outfitters sells Trucker Hats capitalizing on the fad.
Many people consider it to be just as 'vain' as Abercrombie and Fitch, but when compared side-by-side, the two are distinctly different. Although both brands are often described as "preppy," this is a misuse of the term; it more accurately refers to a style that developed in the Ivy League in the mid-1900s, and includes traditional clothing manufacturers such as Brooks Brothers, Lacoste and L.L. Bean.
Many teenagers consider American Eagle to be the 'good-kid' preppy, while Abercrombie and Fitch is the 'good-kid-gone-slutty' kind. Abercrombie and Fitch is considered to be that way because of their marketing - which usually shows more skin than clothing.
American Eagle is considered the 'good-kid' preppy-style store because of its designs. American Eagle's clothing usually has more layering. Most of their clothes are an innocent sort of 'cute', while Abercrombie is more the 'cute, but sexy' type.
If you were to walk into a American Eagle store and look at the mannequins, you would see a lot of layers. The male-mannequin would probably have some style of (non-torn) jeans, with a humor tee stuffed under a polo that is stuffed under a hoodie, a necklace, and/or bracelet.
American Eagle is not free of sexual innuendos, but the innuendos you find are not as distinguished as Abercrombie and Fitch.
