American Canyon, California

American Canyon is a city located in southern Napa County, California, 35 miles northeast of San Francisco. As of 2004, the population was 13,156, up sharply from the 2000 census population of 9,774. Its zip code is 94503, and its area code is 707.

The city was incorporated in 1992.

American Canyon is located at 38°10'5" North, 122°15'9" West (38.168059, -122.252589)Template:GR. American Canyon is bounded geographically by the Napa River to the west, the foothills of the Sulphur Springs Mountains to the east, Vallejo to the south and vineyards and the Napa County Airport (IATA airport code APC) to the north.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.1 mi²), none of which is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9774 people in the city, organized into 3209 households and 2451 families. The population density is 913.7/km² (2,368.0/mi²). There are 3274 housing units at an average density of 306.1/km² (793.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.2% White, 16.16% Asian, 7.34% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 1.29% Pacific Islander, 8.65% from other races, and 6.56% from two or more races. 17.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3209 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.0 and the average family size is 3.4.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $52,105, and the median income for a family is $61,536. Males have a median income of $42,358 versus $29,211 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,440. 8.8% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
