American Association of University Women
|
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is an organization championing women's rights and equity in education. The AAUW was founded in 1881 as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, taking its present name in 1921 after merging with the Southern Association of College Women.
The AAUW consists of two operational units:
- The AAUW Association - advocate for women's issues and legislation
- The AAUW Educational Foundation [EF] and The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund [LAF] - EF is a charitable donation organization, the oldest & one of the largest sources of graduate education funding for women in the US. It educates the public and awards fellowships, grants and research, and special projects with funds donated by AAUW members and others. LAF is a key program within EF and provides funding and a support system for women in higher education who are seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination, sexual harrassment or denial of tenure. It is the nation's largest legal fund working to eliminate sex discrimination in higher education.
Among the highlights of their activities is the annual awarding of over $4 million in grants and scholarships by the AAUW Educational Foundation.
The AAUW's headquarters is located at 1111 Sixteenth St. N.W. in Washington, DC.
