Alpine Township is a township in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 13,976.
The township is located northwest of Grand Rapids. Michigan State Highway 37 runs north-south along the eastern portion of the township.
Wright Township in Ottawa County is to the west, Sparta Township to the north, Plainfield Charter Township to the east, and the City of Walker to the south. It is 36 square miles in area, as none of the original township land has been annexed by other municipalities.
The township became a charter township in 1979, but in 1996, the township de-chartered and returned to general law status.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 93.2 km² (36.0 mi²). 92.9 km² (35.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,976 people, 5,550 households, and 3,468 families residing in the township. The population density is 150.5/km² (389.9/mi²). There are 5,830 housing units at an average density of 62.8/km² (162.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 89.55% White, 3.11% African American, 0.77% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.85% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 6.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,550 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the township the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 17.3% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $42,484, and the median income for a family is $50,068. Males have a median income of $37,143 versus $26,417 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,412. 8.9% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
