Alma is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 847.
The Town of Alma is on the southern edge of Allegany County.

History
The area was first settled around 1833. The Town of Alma was established in 1854 from part of the Town of Willing.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.7 km² (36.5 mi²). 94.4 km² (36.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.25% water.
The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 847 people, 322 households, and 243 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.0/km² (23.2/mi²). There are 533 housing units at an average density of 5.6/km² (14.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.99% White, 0.12% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 322 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,063, and the median income for a family is $35,833. Males have a median income of $31,023 versus $17,778 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,061. 12.0% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Communities and locations in Alma
- Alma -- The hamlet of Alma at the junction of Routes 18 and 38 in the southwest corner of the town.
- Allentown -- A hamlet by Route 417 in the northwest corner of the town. The community was once an oil boom town.
- Honeoye Creek -- A stream flowing through the south part of the town past Alma village.
- Pikeville -- A hamlet in the west part of the town on Route 18.
- Vosburg -- A location on the west town line.
