Alfred Uhl was an Austrian composer, living from 1909 to 1993 who wrote extensively for clarinet with educational material and works that are still common repetoire today. Most famous educations pieces are the two volumes of 48 Studies. Studying at the Vienna State Academy of Music, he later taught at the same institution. One major work is his Divertimento for Three Clarinets and Bass Clarinet, which is one of the most performed works for the medium. Written in 1942 for clarinettists from the Vienna Philharmonic, it is a 3 movement work that, structured similarly to a conventional concerto, is demanding for all players involved.
Other works include a concerto for clarinet and orchestra (Konzertante Sinfonie for Clarinet and Orchestra) and a trio for clarinet, piano and viola (Kleines Konzert).
