Alcoa is a city located in Blount County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,734.
As its name suggests, Alcoa is the site of a large smelting plant owned and operated by the Alcoa corporation. Formerly known as North Maryville, the town was incorporated in 1918 so that the region's tax base would support the area around the plant and not nearby Maryville.
Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport is located in Alcoa.
Geography
Alcoa is located at 35°48'14" North, 83°58'39" West (35.803850, -83.977500)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 38.3 km² (14.8 mi²). 35.7 km² (13.8 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.64% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,734 people, 3,489 households, and 2,159 families residing in the city. The population density is 216.5/km² (560.7/mi²). There are 3,857 housing units at an average density of 108.0/km² (279.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.15% White, 16.01% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 1.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,489 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.80.
In the city the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.
