The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) is a public residential high school located in Mobile, Alabama. It is a member of the NCSSSMST.
The school is modeled on the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts. Students complete their final two (or, in some cases, three) years of high school focusing on advanced studies in mathematics and the sciences. All courses are taught at the AP or Honors level. The school is open to all Alabama high school students through a competitive admissions process; the strong academic program (comprehensive in the humanities as well as the sciences) is complemented by varsity and intramural sports, residential life activities, and college counseling.
The school was founded in 1989 as a unique public-private partnership; the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science is an independent agency of the state government, while the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science Foundation coordinates private support. The first class of students entered in 1991 and graduated in 1993.
The school administration has become increasingly conservative in recent years, since the appointment of Dr. Jane Ellis (previously from the Alabama School of Fine Arts) as the Executive Director.(Now referred to as the 'President/Director.') Some of the more noticeable changes include random school-wide drug tests and stricter adherence to conservative dress codes and appearance, something unusual to the largely liberal students at ASMS.
The school is located in the western portion of downtown Mobile, and is within walking distance of the Mobile Saenger Opera, the recently remodelled Mobile Public Library, and the Exploreum, a "hands-on" science museum with seasonal exhibitions including the Dead Sea Scrolls (2004-2005) and a 300 Year Celebration of Mobile Artwork. The Exploreum also has its own IMAX theater, the J.L. Bedsole IMAX Dome.
