Al-Isra
|
Surat Al-Isra or Bani Isra'il (ie The Night Journey or The Children of Israel) is the 17th sura of the Qur'an. This Surah takes its names from verse 1 or 4 respectively, but this name is merely a title, much like the names of many other surahs, and does not mean that the Isra or the "Children of Israel" are the theme of this Surah. This Makkan surah was revealed in the last year before the Hijra. The primary theme of the Surah is salah (daily prayers), whose number is said to have been fixed at five during the Miraj which it alludes to. In addition, the Surah calls for patience and control in the face of the persecutions the Muslim community was facing at the time.
