History
Originally founded by a government-owned conglomerate DRB-Hicom, the heavily indebted airline was purchased by former Time Warner executive Tony Fernandes's company Tune Air Sdn Bhd for the token sum of one ringgit on December 2nd, 2001. Fernandes proceeded to engineer a remarkable turnaround, turning a profit in 2002 and launching new routes from its hub in Kuala Lumpur International Airport at breakneck speed, undercutting former monopoly operator Malaysia Airlines with promotional fares as low as RM10 (US $2.50).
In 2003, AirAsia opened a second hub at Senai Airport in Johor Bahru near Singapore and launched its first international flights to Thailand. AirAsia has since started a Thai AirAsia subsidiary, added Singapore itself to the destination list, and started flights to Indonesia. Flights to Macau started in June 2004. Beginning April 2005 AirAsia flies to Mainland China (Xiamen) and the Philippines (Manila - Clark International Airport)

AirAsia Co would become the first Asian low-cost airline to serve destinations in China when it will start operating flights between Bangkok and Xiamen from April 25. AirAsia's low-fare Xiamen service will compete with Thai Airways International and Xiamen Airlines Co. AirAsia plans fights to 7 cities in southern China – Guangzhou, Naning, Kunming, Wuhan, Chengdu, Chongqing and Hankou. 4 Asean countries – the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam – are due to take off by September 2005
