The racial makeup of the town is 37.08% White, 58.88% African American, 1.70% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,853 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% are married couples living together, 23.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.94.
